"In an era of virtual neighborhoods and fast-paced Internet communication, The Spectacular of Vernacularaddresses the role of vernacular forms in the work of 27 artists who utilize craft, incorporate folklore, and revel in roadside kitsch to explore the role of culturally specific iconography in the increasingly global world of art. Originally employed as a linguistics term, vernacular is now broadly applied to categories of culture, standing in for “regional,” “folkloric,” or “homemade”—concepts that contemporary artists have investigated since the late 1950s as part of a deeper consideration of the relationship between art and everyday life. For the artists included in the exhibition, aspects of the vernacular—and often specifically American vernacular—provide a platform for narratives of home life, social ritual, and sense of place. Drawing inspiration from such sources as local architecture, amateur photographs, and state fair banners, their work runs the aesthetic spectrum from sleek to handcrafted, underscoring the diverse manifestations of the vernacular within our lived environment and its impact on artists working today."

A new exhibition of work by the prolific German-Australian photographer Helmut Newton entitled "White Women, Sleepless Nights, Big Nudes" is now open at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. The show features photographs from Newton's first three books: White Women (published 1976), Sleepless Nights (1978) and Big Nudes (1981). It was these books that first established Newton's reputation as one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. - HUH Magazine

I've been doing some sculptures with found objects (around my apartment, that is) and photographing them with the iPhone camera. Applying a filter on Camerabag and the results are quite interesting. Mostly these new objects are very fragile and that's what attract me to then.

Posing nude is not something I look forward doing, but when the long-time admired artist Heyd Fontenot had a "casting call" for models at Inman Gallery in Houston, Texas I couldn't just let the once-in-your-life time opportunity go by. Besides from an amazing talented painter with an very unique style, Heyd is the friendliest guy ever and after 10 minutes talking to him, having your clothes off is the last thing going in your head. He's quite a conversationalist and made me feel extreme comfortable for pictures (he later uses those picture to draw from)! Obviously, I'm very excited about this show coming up. No full frontals so you can breathe sigh of relief!
